British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a combined operation on an hidden munitions depot in Syria operated by the Islamic State group (IS), according to the British defence ministry.

The location, identified by surveillance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was located in mountainous terrain just above the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a series of entry passages leading to the facility... initial indications are that the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the strike conducted Saturday night and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - also known as ISIS - enforced extremist governance over parts of Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike demonstrates the UK's leading role, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eradicate any revival of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary stated.

RAF aircraft have conducted patrols over Syria to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of the group following its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank the personnel of our armed forces who took part in this operation for their expertise and their courage," Healey added. "They were part of numerous British troops deployed over the holidays. This action, to take out militants who pose a risk to our safety, shows how British military are always on standby, all year round, keeping Britain secure domestically and strong abroad."

During December, the United States armed forces conducted what it called a "massive strike" on IS targets in the country, following an attack killed two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations estimates IS still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
